Many women are concerned with the side effects of chemotherapy. While in the past, short-term side effects such as nausea and mouth sores were common side effects of chemotherapy, these are much less of an issue today. Prior to beginning chemotherapy, you'll receive an anti nausea medication and, if you will be on a regimen that will make your white blood cell counts low, you will also be given a medication intravenously to keep your white counts normal, keeping your risk of infection low. Other side effects may include hair loss, tingling or numbing (though you should tell your doctor if this occurs to be sure that nerve damage is not an issue), and fatigue. Most women, Dr. Margileth says, are pleasantly surprised that chemotherapy is not as awful as they had originally thought. Hear more about short-term chemotherapy side effects in this video.
